Welcome to series six of the Life of Letters podcast with me producer Heidi
[00:00:08] Speaker B: Cullip and me host, Laura Edridan.
[00:00:11] Speaker A: So we have got a very exciting season six up and coming for you. And the theme this season is all about books. So everyone who's coming on has either written a book and published a book or has one coming up. And that's soon super exciting for me because I did an English literature degree and books really are my bag. It's definitely right up my street this season.
So, Laura, can you tell us a bit more about it?
[00:00:36] Speaker B: Yes. I'm calling this a library of letters.
And I think what's really special about it is that we've got a really mixed bag of types of stories, types of books coming through the conversation, but actually literally onto the page. So we've got Karl Roars, who has worked with Speedball to create their 26th edition of the textbook, which is something that I know a lot of calligraphers and lettering artists and people out there will know of. It's a bit of a bible for lots of artists as well. So that is an incredible story about that history of how they've got to the 26th edition and what his vision is and how it's come to life.
We have got the amazing Danny Bates, who's just released a book called why Q Needs U. And this is looking at all the letters of the Alphabet and the history of each one. It's an incredible piece of work and I highly, highly recommend if you are into your Alphabet and, and letters and understanding why an A looks like an A and why a W looks like a W, then this is a great one to dive into.
We've got some wonderful visual art in the form of India Street Art with Pooja Saxena, who's written a great book that's come out recently as well. So I talked to her all about what that looks like.
Alison Hitchcock founded a charity called From Me to you, which is one of the most amazing charities out there where people can write and donate a letter that gets given to a person going through cancer treatment. It's. I won't. I really want to tell you more about it, but I won't go into any details. Listen to the episode.
That is. That's a wonderful one, though. Definitely a highlight for me. And then Matthias Herzberg, who has created an incredible book cover, talks about hand lettering and book design.
Tim Brooks, who again has this incredible project called Endangered Alphabet and has a mission to preserve lots of the lost or endangered alphabets that are out there. And that is just another epic conversation.
The incredible ladies at Good Type have written a book called Follow your art. And I get to sit down with Alana and Katie and talk to them about the community that they've created and also understanding from a creative perspective how to.
How to find your style, how to follow your art. I mean, you know, the book says what it is and definitely does what it says, so it's a brilliant conversation.
And we then also have the incredible Sam Roberts from Blagg at Better Letters magazine, who talks to us all about some of the publications that he's brought out, but also the fantastic books that represent the lettering artistry around the world. So really a rip. Roar of a ride through a library of letters. And yeah, can't wait to share them all with everyone.
[00:03:41] Speaker A: Yeah, so many, so many different people. And such a wide range of books as well, from, yeah, Letters, ancient Letters, Alphabet through to Visual arts. Yeah, it's a really, really exciting season with some incredible books. I'm really, really excited to hear them all.
